My Needs Are Not Special

For this post I want to talk about something that has been on my mind recently. I think everyone can agree that the words we use have power and meaning and once you put something out into the world there is no taking it back! So, it is always important to be cautious and respectful about the words we say. Sometimes when I am out and about, I will hear people refer to people with disabilities as “special needs” this is something that has always irked me. I hope you will be able to take this time and listen to my perspective.

In my opinion everyone that you meet whether they identify as having a disability or not has needs, wants, and desires. For people with disabilities, we can do the same things as non-disabled people we might just have to accommodate things a little differently! For example, let’s say you have a friend who uses a speech device to communicate. If you are having a conversation with your friend laughing back and forth and are verbally responding back to your friend and having a good time what about this is special? You are both communicating to each other and having a conversation your friend just may have to accommodate things differently so they can communicate! However, you and your friend are both talking and having a meaningful conversation.

I think that some people use the term “special needs” because they are afraid to offend people with disabilities. I want to let you know that using the word disabled is not a negative thing! For myself personally, I prefer to be called disabled more than any other term. Having a disability does not define me as a person but it is part of my identity, and it is something that I am proud of, and I am not embarrassed or ashamed. My “needs” are not special and no matter if you are disabled or nondisabled, we are all human and have the same human rights!

I want to make it clear that I am not trying to point fingers at anyone with this post. I also understand that not everyone will agree with my point of view. I am simply just trying to educate and give people a different perspective to think about! I encourage open discussion on this page so if this is a topic that you would like to talk more about feel free to discuss! Just please keep the conversation respectful and kind. But for right now I must go what I “need” is some coffee!
Sincerely.
Kelsi

  1. Hey Kelsi well put.I’m glad that you are comfortable with being called disabled. I hope to someday get to that point, but as for now I don’t like being called disabled. Don’t get me wrong I know and understand that I am disabled. It does bother me when big companies are not up to code and handi cap accessible. I went in a store one day about a month ago and couldn’t get up and down the isles. I had a polite chat with the person in charge st the time and he said they would try to fix the problem. I really haven’t been back. Well end of my blog 😆. Take care y’all.
